🔴 2026

Crockett County covers 2,807 square miles of West Texas rangeland, with Ozona as its only incorporated town. The county’s economy has always depended on ranching and oil and gas production — a combination that makes property valuation both subjective and consequential. With an effective tax rate estimated around 2.4% and median home values well under $30,000, even modest dollar bills represent a significant burden relative to property values.

Very few protests are filed in Crockett County each year. That low participation almost certainly reflects lack of awareness, not lack of merit. Texas law gives every property owner the right to protest — and at no cost. The ARB cannot raise your value at a hearing.

— Section 13, Declaration of Rights, Republic of Texas, 1836

Crockett County’s ranching families have worked this land through drought and boom and bust for generations. A 2.4% effective tax rate on property that isn’t worth much in dollar terms still costs real money against real incomes. The founders of this Republic had something to say about that. Look up your value. File your protest. Show up to the hearings. You have every right to do so.
