Comal County has been one of the fastest-growing counties in the entire United States for more than a decade. New Braunfels sits at the intersection of I-35 and I-35W, and the growth from San Antonio and Austin has driven property values to levels that many longtime residents never anticipated. The total market value of property in the county reached $53 billion by 2023.
In 2024, 59% of ARB appeals were successful for Comal County property owners — and 23% of all parcels were subject to protest. If you own property in Comal County and have not protested in the last two years, your assessed value may be significantly above where it should be. The 10% homestead cap helps — but only if you have the exemption on file.

“No person’s particular services shall be demanded, nor property taken or applied to public use, unless by the consent of himself or his representative, without just compensation being made therefor.”
— Section 13, Declaration of Rights, Republic of Texas, 1836
Comal County is growing because people want to live here — close to the Hill Country, on the river, between two great cities. But growth that benefits developers and taxing entities should not come at the cost of the families who built their lives here first. The founders’ principle stands: your property cannot be burdened beyond just compensation without your consent. Look up your value. File your protest. Show up. The people setting these rates are your neighbors.
