🔴 2026 Protest Deadline: May 15, 2026 — or 30 days after your Notice of Appraised Value is mailed, whichever is later. Miss this date and you waive your right to protest.
Houston County holds the distinction of being one of the oldest counties in Texas — named for Sam Houston himself and organized in 1837, just one year after the Republic’s founding. Crockett is the county seat, named for Davy Crockett who passed through on his way to the Alamo. The county’s economy runs on timber production, agriculture, and some oil and gas activity in the East Texas field.
At 0.84%, Houston County carries one of the lowest effective rates in the state. But on timber and rural land that has seen rising demand from Houston metro buyers seeking hunting tracts and rural retreats, even a low rate produces compounding bills when the base value climbs. Nearly half of those who protested in 2024 achieved reductions. Your deadline is May 15, 2026.

— Section 13, Declaration of Rights, Republic of Texas, 1836
Houston County was named for the man who led Texas to independence — a man who believed absolutely that property rights were the foundation of a free republic. Sam Houston’s county today has one of the lowest tax rates in Texas, but that doesn’t mean every valuation is fair. The right to protest is the same here as anywhere else in the state. Look up your value. File your protest. The father of Texas would approve.
